Inflammatory Response in Preterm and Very Preterm Newborns with Sepsis

The response of the adaptive immune system is usually less intense in premature neonates than term neonates. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether immunological parameters vary between preterm (PT) neonates (≥32 weeks of gestational age) and very preterm (VPT) neonates (<32 weeks of gestational age). A cross-sectional study was designed to prospectively follow PT and VPT ...

Circulating 5-hydroxytryptamine concentrations in preterm newborns.

Alterations in circulating 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) concentrations play a role in the pathophysiology of respiratory failure in adults. We undertook a study to develop a micromethod and measure circulating free 5-HT concentrations in preterm newborns with and without respiratory distress. Forty-six samples of platelet-poor plasma were obtained from 29 preterm newborns with varying degrees of ...

Thrombopoietic activity in preterm newborns and infants.

Platelet count and thrombopoietic activity were investigated in preterm infants at birth and during their first four months of life. Thrombopoiesis stimulating factor activity in cord serum was significantly lower than that of adults and of the respective mothers. No difference was noted between thrombopoietic activity in cord serum in the various gestational ages studied--that is, 24 through 3...
